Brown University seeks an experienced, creative, and collaborative individual for the position of Brown University Archives Survey Project Archivist. Reporting to the Archivist, Collections Management and Accessioning, the Brown University Archives Survey Archivist will conduct a full survey of non-published University Archives collections stored at the John Hay Library. The University Archives are located on two floors of the John Hay Library stacks. The collections include Brown University office and departmental records, alumni papers, blueprints, prints, drawings, photographs, audiovisual items, and maps.
The Survey Archivist will utilize existing spreadsheets, the ArchivesSpace collection management software, and the Alma library catalog software. The Archivist will record collection metadata such as call number, title, box numbers, extent, brief scope notes, and location. The Survey Archivist will identify and correct misfiled and/or misidentified collection material. The Survey Archivist will update and enter metadata into ArchivesSpace and into Alma to create permanent records with collection information and any provenance information the Survey Archivist is able to locate about the materials. To support this work, the Survey Archivist will train and mentor one student assistant to perform entry-level tasks.
Education and Experience
Masters degree from an ALA accredited school of library and information science, with a concentration in archives or successful completion of 2 archival management and courses and a MARC cataloging course or equivalent education and experience.
Preferred one year experience in an archives or special collections environment.
Demonstrated proficiency with MARC cataloging standard.
Experience with archival database management systems (ArchivesSpace) and online library catalogs (ALMA preferred).
Advanced computer skills, including database and spreadsheet literacy.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing complex environment and to set priorities.
Ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and work in a team.
